Jessica Biel to Play Vera Miles in ALFRED HITCHCOCK AND THE MAKING OF PSYCHO

jessica-biel-vera-miles-slice

Jessica Biel is set to join Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, and possibly James D’Arcy in Sacha Gervasi‘s Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho.  According to Deadline, Biel is set to play Vera Miles who played Lila Crane, the sister of unfortunate Bates Motel guest, Marion Crane.  Johansson is set to play Janet Leigh (who played Marion), Hopkins will play Hitchock, and Mirren will play Hitchcock’s wife, Alma Reville, and if D’Arcy signs on, he’ll play Anthony Perkins (who played Norman Bates).

Hit the jump for more.

Making of Psycho is one of two Hitchcock-based productions in the works.  Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane) is directing The Girl, which focuses on the making of The Birds, and stars Toby Jones as Hitchcock and Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedrin.  Keep these Hitchcock flicks on your Oscar radar since the Academy loves famous people playing famous people, and they’ll probably like movies that focus on the legendary filmmaker even though Hitchcock only won a lifetime achievement award despite being nominated for Best Director five times during his career (he had the best and shortest acceptance speech of all time: “Thank you, very much indeed”).

Biel will next be seen in Len Wiseman‘s remake of Total Recall starring Colin Farrell, and in December she’ll be co-starring with Gerard Butler in the little league soccer comedy Playing the Field.

Clark Gregg (S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson) Talks About Viewing a Recent Cut of THE AVENGERS

a-funny-thing-happened-on-the-way-to-thors-hammer-clark-gregg-slice

In the Disney XD Marvel Universe animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, actor Clark Gregg voices Agent Phil Coulson. Although it’s the character that he also plays in Marvel’s live-action theatrical films, in this incarnation, Coulson is planted as the principal of Midtown High to keep a watchful eye on a teenage Peter Parker (voiced by Drake Bell) while he trains Spider-Man and the teen superheroes for the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization.

While we will run the portion of the interview where he talks about his involvement in the new series closer to its April 1st premiere date, we did want to post what he had to say about having seen a cut of the highly anticipated superhero movie The Avengers, which will hit theaters on May 4th.  Clearly a fan himself, Gregg thinks fans will be very excited with what director Joss Whedon has done with the film.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

avengers-chris-hemsworth-clark-greggCollider: Have you been able to see a cut yet of The Avengers?

Clark Gregg: I will say yes to that. I’m not going to lie. I have seen a cut.

What did you think of it? How much more impressive was it then what you expected?

Gregg: I’m very excited for people to see this movie. I think the fans, like me, will be as excited as I was, when I saw it. From the minute I read Joss Whedon’s script, I thought, “Oh, man, this is going to be fun to do!” The hardest thing to get right is to figure out how to bring all those characters together, and to fulfill the promise of The Avengers. They really set a very high bar for themselves because you’ve been setting this coalition up, for these five movies, and they better deliver. And in my opinion, they thoroughly deliver.

Almost 40 New Images from John Cusack’s THE RAVEN

john-cusack-the-raven-slice

The Raven has the unenviable task of drawing audience’s attention (and dollars) away from this year’s slate of big action movies. Luckily for the Gothic murder mystery inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe, April looks to be one of the weaker months for this year’s box office. However, it will only have about one week to rake in the cash until a little movie called The Avengers comes out. Until then, we have a host of new images from The Raven featuring John Cusack, Alice Eve, Luke Evans, Bredan Gleeson and Oliver Jackson-Cohen in various shades of Gothic black. The James McTeigue thriller opens April 27th. Hit the jump to see the images.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Raven. The images follow below.

In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack, Being John Malkovich) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster). When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.

Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

Legendary Pictures Acquires Martin Helgeland’s Dragon Hunter Script, SLAYER

dragon-slice

Legendary Pictures has picked up Martin Helgeland‘s spec script for Slayer.  Per THR, “Slayer is described as a modern-day story about a young doctor whose estranged father dies and he finds out the old man was a dragon and creature slayer. The doctor must become a slayer too.”  What a terrible profession switch.  Med school is extensive and ridiculously expensive, and when you finally get to be a doctor, you learn that you now have to slay dragons.  There’s no residency for that profession.

It’s been a while since we’ve had a live-action dragon story.  They’re part of Game of Thrones, but when it comes to feature films, I believe the last major one was Reign of Fire.  I’m always up for some good, old-fashioned dragon hunting since I love the blend of a gigantic, ancient creature battling against puny humans.  Of course, all dragons cower in fear when faced with a medical degree.  [Artist credit: Mauricio Herrara]

WonderCon 2012: ALCATRAZ Panel Recap; Jorge Garcia, Sarah Jones and More Talk Season Finale, Their Favorite Prisoners and a Possible Second Season

alcatraz-tv-series-cast-slice

The cast and creative team behind freshman Fox drama Alcatraz were on hand at WonderCon 2012 to talk about what fans can expect from the season finale. In a mystery/action combination that has drawn parallels to Lost, Alcatraz follows a federal agent (Sam Neill of Jurassic Park) who enlists a police detective and an expert on the history of the island prison to help him track down a group of inmates that disappeared in 1963 and have since returned in present-day San Francisco to continue their criminal activities. The stars present at the panel were Jorge Garcia (Lost), Sarah Jones (Big Love), Parminder Nagra (E.R.), Jonny Coyne (The Bill) and Robert Forster (Heroes). Also present were executive producers Jennifer Johnson and Daniel Pyne, as well as co-creators Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt. Hit the jump to check out our panel recap for Alcatraz.

The panel kicked off the event with a high-octane montage that acted as a teaser of sorts for the 2 hour season finale, which airs Monday, March 26th at 8pm EST on Fox. Fans of the show will be happy to know that Detective Rebecca Madsen (Jones) finally comes face-to-face with Tommy Madsen (David Hoflin), the man who killed her partner who just so happens to be her grandfather and an escaped Alcatraz inmate. (Fans of the classic car chase scene from Bullitt will be happy to hear that the showrunners painstakingly recreated the race through the San Francisco streets for Alcatraz’s finale.) Check out what the cast and crew had to say below:

alcatraz-cast-wondercon2012When asked about the inspiration for the show, co-creator Lilien said that he’d wanted to combine mystery and mythology into a show for some time and that the idea of Alcatraz literally came to him in a dream. He liked the twist that the prison closed due to a conspiracy and every one of the inmates disappeared. He took the idea to Wynbrandt and they developed it from there. When asked, “Why Alcatraz?” Wynbrandt responded, “The word itself evokes [something] Gothic and mysterious. Robert Kennedy signed the papers to shut it down. If there’s a Kennedy involved, it has to be a conspiracy.”Garcia quipped that on shows where the secretive plot lines can get a bit confusing (alluding to his time spent on Lost), he said, “Going with the flow is what you learn for these shows.”Johnson commented on the fact that the writing team figures out the world of Alcatraz a little more with each passing inmate and episode. On how Jones got the lead role, she said, “I just kinda fell into it…even though I’m not the Evangeline Lily type.”Since Nagra’s character, Dr. Lucy Banerjee, is currently in the show in the 1960s, she occurs in a lot of flashbacks. Nagra said she thoroughly enjoyed working with the actors who played the inmates. In a potential [SPOILER], Johnson said that they certainly wouldn’t “waste her only in the past.”alcatraz-sarah-jones-parminder-nagra-wondercon-2012Johnson spoke briefly about the finale, saying that audiences would meet a character they haven’t seen yet and he (or she) would be working with Warden James (Coyne). The finale will reveal the character behind the Warden’s story. Johnson also said that there was a certain “wink” from the Warden in this week’s episode that clued the audience into a very important scene or person. When asked if his girlfriend Nikki (Jeananne Goossen) on Alcatraz would meet a similar fate to his girlfriend Libby (Cynthia Watros) on Lost, Garcia replied that he’d been “cock-blocked by Kevin Bacon,” owing to the fact that Goossen has a role in an upcoming TV movie starring Bacon.According to Wynbrandt and Johnson, the 63s (the escaped inmates) heal faster and age slower than normal people due to colloidal silver in their blood. Answers surrounding this mysterious source of the blood will be found in next week’s finale.Lilien remarked, “Our criminals are too good-looking on Alcatraz.”Pyne commented that, “There are more of them [inmates] back than we know about.”Coyne talked about the continuing power play between the Warden and Deputy Warden E. B. Tiller (Jason Butler Harner). He says that the tension between them will continue to build.alcatraz-jorge-garcia-sarah-jones-wondercon-2012Wynbrandt commented that, “It’s not just what happened to the 63s, it’s what happened to everyone involved,” and the show will eventually reveal how they came together.Johnson stated that the Warden likes to create competition among his staff and stressed that the events of the past will have an influence on the present.[SPOILER] There is an antagonistic scene in the finale between Tommy Madsen and his brother, Ray Archer (Forster), but it is further explored with a touching scene between the two men at an infirmary in 1960, which is also shown in the finale.Jones’ character will drive her Ford Mustang Fastback for the car chase, just like Steve McQueen did in Bullitt. Lilien said that “downstairs” will be opened at the end of the season and they will show people what’s behind the door.Johnson and Pyne teased that there is a big cliffhanger at the end of the finale, because they aren’t sure about the progression into a second season yet. The finale will satisfy a lot of questions for fans, however.alcatraz-cast-wondercon-2012Favorite inmates of the cast and crew are as follows: For Jones, it was Sonny Burnett (Theo Rossi); for Nagra and Coyne, it was Ernest Cobb (Joe Egender); Garcia’s favorite was Jeff Pierce’s Jack Sylvane; Lilien’s was actually the first guard, Guy Hastings (Jim Parrack) but he did say that Lucy (Nagra) was their favorite 63; Wynbrandt preferred the Ames Brothers (Graham Shiels and Travis Aaron Wade), but he also mentioned that Kit Nelson (Michael Eklund) frightened all of them; and Forster’s favorite is, of course, his brother Tommy Madsen (Hoflin). As for what fans can expect if there is to be a second season, questions are asked as to what happened to Rebecca’s parents, Doc’s (Garcia) backstory is touched on and if Neill has anything to do with it there will be “more death. He wants less lines and more shooting.”

The season finale of Alcatraz airs at 8pm EST this Monday, March 26th. Just for fun, relive the car chase from Bullitt below before you see it re-enacted on the small screen.

Casting Call: Clark Duke and Ken Howard Join Comedy A.C.O.D.; Anthony Head Replaces Pierce Brosnan in PERCY JACKSON Sequel

clark-duke-ken-howard-anthony-head-slice

We’ve got a couple of casting stories to share with you this evening. First up, Clark Duke (Kick-Ass) and SAG President (and frequent 30 Rock guest) Ken Howard are the latest to join the comedy A.C.O.D. The title stands for “Adult Children of Divorce”, and the plot centers on a guy (Adam Scott) who has been caught in his parents’ ugly divorce of the past twenty years, and matters become even worse when his brother gets engaged.  Then the details of the feud are revealed in a definitive new book on children of divorce.

The already stellar ensemble cast includes Scott, Amy Poehler, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jane Lynch, Jessica Alba, Catherine O’Hara and Richard Jenkins. Variety reports that Howard will play Scott’s amicable stepfather and Duke will play Scott’s younger brother whose engagement forces the parents to meet once again. Duke is incredibly funny and Howard brings down the house on 30 Rock, so the two are very much welcome additions to an incredibly exciting project. Hit the jump for casting news concerning the next Percy Jackson film.

percy-jackson-the-olympians-sea-of-monsters-book-coverAdditionally, producers are recasting yet another role for the sequel to Percy Jackson & The Olmpians: The Lightening Thief. We recently learned that Nathan Fillion will be taking over the role of Hermes in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, and now Heat Vision reports that Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has been tapped to play Chrion in follow-up. The centaur part was filled by Pierce Brosnan in the first film, but for unspecified reasons Head will be stepping in this time around. Thor Freudenthal is directing the pic, which sees the return of Logan Lerman as the titular Percy. He embarks with his other demigod friends to the Island of the Cyclops (the Bermuda Triangle) in order to retrieve a Golden Fleece.

Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson are returning as well, with Lightening Thief director Chris Columbus set as producer. Other additions include Missi Pyle, Yvette Nicole Brown and Mary Birdsong as the three fates. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Sea of Monsters opens on March 27th, 2013.

Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb to Star in Comedy HELL BABY from Co-Directors Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant

Reno 911! stars and non-stop screenwriters Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant are set to make their co-directorial debut on the horror comedy Hell Baby, and they’ve found their two leads. Darko Entertainment announced today that Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb (Talladega Nights) have signed on to star in the comedy that centers on a young expectant couple who moves in to New Orleans most haunted fixer-upper and calls upon The Vatican’s elite exorcism team to save them from a demonic baby. Lennon and Garant wrote the script, will co-direct, and plan to star as the Vatican’s exorcism team.

Lennon and Garant have made a nice living in recent years writing younger-skewing comedies like The Pacifier and the Night at the Museum films (they even wrote a book entitled Writing Movies for Fun and Profit). Hell Baby sounds like it has hints of Rosemary’s Baby, and for Corddry’s sake as a comedian I hope they’ve written a more adult comedy. Bibb currently stars on the ABC series GCB and Corddry recently wrapped the zombie adaptation Warm Bodies. Hit the jump to read the press release.

LOS ANGELES (March 20, 2012) – Darko Entertainment and Principato-Young Entertainment announced today the companies will produce “Hell Baby,” which will mark co-screenwriters Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant’s feature film directorial debut.  Darko Entertainment will finance the film.  Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb have signed on to star. “Hell Baby” will be produced by Darko Entertainment’s Sean McKittrick, Jeff Culotta and Ted Hamm; Principato-Young’s Peter Principato and Paul Young; and Garant/Lennon Productions.  The film is set to start production on location in New Orleans in April.

In the horror comedy “Hell Baby,” a young expectant couple moves in to New Orleans most haunted fixer-upper and calls upon The Vatican’s elite exorcism team to save them from a demonic baby.  Lennon and Garant will portray that team.

The film is an original script from the multi-hyphenates Lennon and Garant, who have written nine feature films together including “Night at the Museum,” “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” “Taxi,” “Reno 911!: Miami,” “Balls of Fury,” and “The Pacifier.”  They are currently writing “Rentaghost” for 20th Century Fox and Ben Stiller.

As an actor, Lennon has appeared in numerous films including “I Love You, Man,” “Bad Teacher,” and the forthcoming comedy “What To Expect When Your Expecting,” which will be released in May.

Garant has directed such features as “Reno 911!: Miami” and “Balls of Fury,” which he co-wrote with Lennon.  He also directed numerous episodes of the television series, “Reno 911!.”  Additionally, Garant wrote the feature “Jessabelle,” which will begin production next month in Wilmington, North Carolina for Lionsgate Films and will be produced by Blumhouse Productions and Principato-Young Entertainment.

Their television credits include MTV’S “The State,” Comedy Central’s “Viva Variety,” and the long-running and hugely popular “Reno 911!,” which spawned a feature film, “Reno: 911!: Miami.”  Their first book, Writing Movies for Fun and Profit, was published last July and was a staple on the Los Angeles Times Bestseller List, and will come out in paperback this July (Touchstone Books/Simon & Schuster).

Maggie Grace talks LOCKOUT, Working With Luc Besson and Guy Pearce, DECODING ANNIE PARKER and More at WonderCon 2012

Maggie-Grace-lockout-interview-slice

At this weekend’s WonderCon, I was able to sit down with Maggie Grace (Lost) for an extended interview.  The reason she was attending the con was to promote Luc Besson‘s high-octane outer space thriller Lockout that also stars Guy Pearce.   In the film, Pearce plays Snow, a man wrongly accused of conspiracy to commit espionage. His one chance at a pardon comes when he is tasked with rescuing the president’s daughter from a maximum security outer space prison facility when the inmates take control.  Lockout is the feature directorial debut of James Mather and Stephen St. Leger and it opens April 13th.  For more on the film, here’s a five minute clip and our recap of the WonderCon panel.

During my interview with Grace, we talked about how she got cast, how Lockout is more of a throwback sci-fi movie, what it’s like to work for Luc Besson and with Guy Pearce, if it was more fun playing Liam Neeson‘s daughter in Taken or the President’s daughter in Lockout, and more.  In addition, Grace talks about Decoding Annie Parker (which comes out later this year) and how she’s currently filming something in Atlanta but can’t reveal what it is yet.  Hit the jump to watch.

And if you missed the first part of this interview where Grace talked about Taken 2 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, click here.

Maroon 5 Frontman and THE VOICE Judge Adam Levine Joining Season 2 of AMERICAN HORROR STORY

adam-levine-american-horror-story-slice

The musician has been all over TV as one of the judges of The Voice, but now EW reports that Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine is set to make his TV acting debut in the popular horror series American Horror Story on FX for its second season. Levine will play one half of a romantic duo called The Lovers, but no details beyond that have been revealed. The second season is very much shrouded in mystery, but so far we know that series regulars Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Lily Rabe will all be back as completely different characters this time around with the story set on the East Coast in a horror institution. I like the idea of each season following a whole new set of characters with a different cast, but I hope there’s more of a real story and less shock scares and weirdness this time around.

Kenneth Branagh in Talks to Direct Jack Ryan Reboot Starring Chris Pine

jack-ryan-reboot-kenneth-branagh

Just over a week after original director Jack Bender (Lost) dropped out of the project, Paramount looks to have found a suitable replacement to helm their reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise (The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games). Vulture reports that Kenneth Branagh is now in negotiations to direct the pic, which sees Star Trek’s Chris Pine take over the franchise that has been toplined in the past by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. The project has been in development for quite some time, with a number of writers taking a stab at the screenplay. Paramount is hoping to finally get cameras rolling later this year once Pine wraps the Star Trek sequel, and having a director onboard is a fairly crucial necessity to make that happen. Hit the jump to find out what the hold up has been.

kenneth-branagh-jack-ryan-rebootGiven the revolving door of screenwriters on the project, it’s no surprise that creative differences have lead to this prolonged development process. Vulture hears that Pine wanted to make the film a character-driven espionage movie, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura wanted an action pic, and Paramount executives were in favor of turning the untitled reboot into a thriller. The issue has been finding a screenwriter who can combine those three genres into one cohesive movie, and apparently David Koepp (Spider-Man) recently turned in a draft that attempts to appease everyone’s demands.

I thought Branagh knocked Thor out of the park, and Paramount is surely hoping he’ll turn the untitled Jack Ryan film into a similar hit. Bringing someone of Branagh’s caliber onboard gives me hope that the studio isn’t all about explosions, and hopefully Pine’s character-driven spy thriller is the take that most prominently shines through. The reboot takes place in present day, so it won’t exactly be in step with the previous films, which were adapted from Tom Clancy’s series of novels. With Branagh nearly set, hopefully things can move forward and Paramount can hit that September 2012 start date to get the film in theaters sometime next year or in 2014.

Emma Stone and Marc Webb Talk THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, Honoring the Marvel Icon, and Why Andrew Garfield is the Perfect Spider-Man

With its July 3rd release date quickly approaching, it wasn’t a surprise that The Amazing Spider-Man had a panel presentation at WonderCon 2012 with actress Emma Stone (aka Gwen Stacy) and director Marc Webb. This gritty and grounded take on Peter Parker’s origin story and evolution into Spider-Man is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated films of the summer.

Prior to their panel presentation (read Dave’s recap here), Emma Stone and Marc Webb talked to the press about the idea that Spider-Man is bigger than any one person, honoring the iconography of the story and character while still making it their own movie, living up to fan expectations, what they’re hoping to explore with the relationship between Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy, why they decided to return to the origin story, and what made Andrew Garfield the perfect Spider-Man. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

amazing-spider-man-image-andrew-garfield-emma-stone-14Collider: Are you getting a sense of the excitement for the film, now that little pieces have gotten out?

Marc Webb: Yeah, it’s intimidating. There’s something liberating about the idea that Spider-Man is so much bigger than any one of us.

Emma Stone: Yes, absolutely! You feel like a little cog in a really big machine, which is so nice. It makes it a little bit more pressure-less. For me, it feels like they’re coming to see Spider-Man. That’s what it’s all about.

Webb: But, it’s been really fun. I think there’s a real genuine sense of enthusiasm and curiosity, which is fun. You do have to honor the iconographic elements of Spider-Man, but it’s been fun to put ourselves in it, in a different and new way.

andrew-garfrield-the-amazing-spider-man-imageHow do you honor that iconography, but also make it your own movie?

Webb: Well, I think there are elements of Spider-Man that are just universal. He shoots webs and he soars through the sky and he’s a little guy who beats up guys that are bigger than him. He fights for the little guy. I think that’s a really important thing. For me, there were a few things in the Spider-Man comics that I thought were really interesting. There’s this story about Peter’s parents and where he came from, and I thought that it was really interesting to explore the emotional consequence of someone whose parents had left them, at a very young age. I like that this Peter Parker has a little bit of a chip on his shoulder. In The Amazing Spider-Man #8, there’s this moment where Flash and Peter are going at each other. They’re at a boxing match, and you hear what Peter is saying and he’s a little surly, and I like that. There’s this attitude that’s a punk rock humor and trickster quality that probably comes from somebody who is a little distrustful of the world, at times. In order for someone like that to become a hero, I think it’s a really interesting story, and that was something that was really fun to explore. And then, of course, there’s the Gwen Stacy saga and The Lizard. What we tried to do was find something very emotionally grounded, and that felt very real. That’s a challenge, when there’s big lizards and soaring through the air, but that’s what was really fun about it.

Emma, what was fun for you, in regard to showing up for work, every day?

emma-stone-the-amazing-spider-man-imageStone: Well, there were fun elements, like swinging, that I’d never done, or reacting to something that’s not there, which was interesting. But, the greatest take-away was realizing that everything is so grounded in reality. It doesn’t matter how big the world is around you, or the blue screens in the background. You are doing a scene between two people, and it’s human and it’s real. That’s a comforting thing, when you’re in something that’s so seemingly daunting and it’s such a big environment. It’s nice, at the end of the day, to know that you’re just acting as you would be, in any circumstance.

Does seeing how hard-core these fans are about the comic make you nervous at all, in living up to that expectation?

Stone: Initially, definitely, but then you realize that there’s just so much material when it comes to Spider-Man. I had done The Help right before this, and that was a book, so there was also that fan base. But, that’s one book, and this is 50 years worth of comic book material. There are different incarnations of Gwen, and I realized that you can’t please everybody, and that you were cast because they’re hoping that you can bring this character to life, in the best way that you know how. So, at the end of the day, I hope that people are satisfied. I know that not everybody will be, and that’s one of those trials of being human, when you learn that not everybody can like you. It is a tough lesson, isn’t it? But, it’s important, and I think that people will be okay with my incarnation.

We haven’t seen much about Gwen Stacy, outside of the comics. What are you hoping to explore with this relationship?

Webb: Well, I think that Peter Parker eventually learns about sacrifice through Gwen Stacy. But, in order to adequately learn that lesson, you have to feel that really strong bond. In terms of what we set out to do with this relationship, specifically between Peter and Gwen, the first time that you meet a girl in high school, and you get to share things with that person that you might not have shared with any other people, that creates a bond and an intensity that has a lot of currency. When you get that opportunity to be honest and open with somebody, for the first time, and share things about yourself that you haven’t been able to share before, that you might be scared of or ashamed about, that’s really exhilarating, and I think that’s something that people will really identify with. That was something that was fun about the relationship. And then, in terms of Gwen as a character, she’s really smart. She’s got this scientific quality. But, she’s in a weird position, stuck between the different men in her life.

denis-leary-the-amazing-spider-man-imageStone: Yeah, there’s her duty to her father and her duty to her boyfriend because she’s a real confidante for him. Their intimacy is such an incredible element. Gwen has been in control her whole life. She’s the oldest daughter of a police chief, who is constantly terrified that her father is going to die, every day. She has to have an element of being smart because she has to be. She’s a valedictorian because she has to be. She has to take care of things and be responsible for her family. She has to try to let go and trust somebody else who puts themselves in the face of death, every day. It’s like, “Great, now she’s drawn to another person that could die, at any moment, and she has to keep his secret, and pick and choose between her first love, which is her father, like every girl.” That’s the first man in your life, and then there’s your first boyfriend. So, it’s a pretty complex situation for Gwen. There’s a lot of sadness and fear in her life, combined with the fact that she’s outwardly confident and strong and smart, and takes no bullshit. She’s soft and 17, underneath it all.

Webb: There’s a great source of drama, and Gwen is at the center of it, in a lot of ways. There are competing ideas of what’s good. Everybody’s heart is in the right place, but they execute their plans in different ways, and that goes for The Lizard and Curt Connors, as well. Gwen, in particular, is stuck between The Captain and Peter Parker and Spider-Man, who have different ways of going about finding justice in their lives. I think that’s a really fun thing to explore in the movie.

amazing-spider-man-andrew-garfield-emma-stone-hi-res-02With the romance being so important in the story, how quickly did you see the chemistry happening between Emma and Andrew [Garfield]? Did that happen right away?

Webb: I know that, when we did a screen test, what was great was that Emma brought a level of humor and levity that Andrew really responded to, and there was this immediate sense of lightness in the interaction, which I think tracks really beautifully on screen. When you have that, you just want to spend time with them. There was a spontaneity on set. You could tell that Emma had done a lot of improv because they were just firing it off, and that was really cool. We had this very big, huge movie with a lot of visual effects and a lot of pressure and a lot of days, and then you have these wistful spirits who are just snappy. That was a real joy to watch.

With 50 years worth of Spider-Man to draw from, why go back and explore this origin story again, so soon?

amazing-spider-man-image-andrew-garfield-emma-stone-11Webb: Well, we’re telling the story in a different way. I think it’s really important, when you’re redefining a character, for the audience to experience things that they haven’t experienced, from the ground up. I wanted to build a character. I feel like point of view is a really crucial thing in the story, and that you need to build up the emotional building blocks, so that you can experience all the other emotions in a very specific way, rather than just experiencing it in an intellectual way. That’s why, at the beginning of the movie, there’s the story of his parents being pulled from him. You want to feel what that sense of abandonment, as an audience member, so that you can readily and appropriately identify. We’re creating a different universe with different rules and a different tone and different villains. We were very careful to honor the iconography of Spider-Man, but we wanted to tell it in a new and different way.

Emma, what was your first exposure to Spider-Man?

amazing-spider-man-image-emma-stone-28Stone: The Sam Raimi trilogy. I didn’t read comics, growing up. I watched a lot of movies, and those were my comic books. So, it was the trilogy. And then, my exposure really increased by becoming affiliated with Spider-Man. When I found out that I was going to audition for Gwen, I looked into the Gwen Stacy story. I was so excited that it was Gwen because, when your exposure has been the Sam Raimi trilogy, you only really knew about Mary Jane, other than Bryce Dallas Howard’s portrayal in the third movie, but that’s a totally different version of Gwen. So, it was like I had some backstory, all of a sudden, to the Peter and Mary Jane relationship. He’s gone through something so horribly traumatic in his life and has such a sense of guilt that it really added so much to the story. So, I was so excited to get to be a part of bringing that story to life.

Marc, why was Andrew Garfield the perfect Spider-Man?

amazing-spider-man-movie-image-andrew-garfieldWebb: We looked at a lot of people, and then we started casting and there was something about him. I remember that there was a very specific moment, when we were screen testing with Andrew. He was eating a cheeseburger that wasn’t really in the movie. It was just for the screen test. And he moved in a way that felt adolescent. He was eating a cheeseburger and he flopped his elbows around, and I didn’t know what I was drawn to, initially. I just watched it over and over again. I couldn’t stop watching it. I thought that it was so interesting, and there were so many layers in the performance, and I was drawn to it. I just wanted to watch it, over and over again. Beyond that, he’s emphatic about finding authenticity and emotional reality in a scene, and he will not reach for jokes. He will not reach for any kind of emotion that does not feel real or authentic. That’s an enormous gift. It’s a very difficult thing for actors because they’re often asked to do things that are really crazy. When you have to react to a lizard that’s a tennis ball, it’s a really, really difficult, tricky piece of craft. He could do that in a way that felt real, and I felt that was really exceptional. Beyond that, he can do emotional depth and heartbreaking scenes. There’s a lot of tragedy in the movie. He can do romance and he can do humor, as can Emma, but that’s a very, very rare combination to find, in an actor. You become increasingly aware of how rare that is, as you start to try to find that. He’s an exceptional human and an exceptional craftsman, in that regard.

Why was it important for you to restore the smart-ass element of peter Parker?

amazing-spider-man-emma-stone-andrew-garfieldWebb: I think it emerges from a kind of attitude. There’s a punk rock quality to Peter Parker, that I identified with when I read the comics, and that I really liked. He has this chip on his shoulder. That humor is something that’s so crucial and so part of the DNA of Spider-Man and the comics. I liked a little bit of that wise-ass quality, and Andrew really took a shine to it and was able to pull it off. He hadn’t done a lot of funny movies before this, but he can be very wistful.

Is Gwen also funny?

Stone: I’m sure some stuff snuck in there. The nice thing is that Gwen’s story is really through Peter Parker. You very rarely see her outside of him. And in a relationship that’s a first relationship, there’s levity and there’s heartbreak. Of course, there are funny moments, and he really has a pretty incredible, hilarious sequence. It’s pretty fantastic.

Webb: He’s great. It’s very good. He does this sort of physical comedy really well.

Stone: Yeah, he’s great at physical comedy.

Webb: You don’t see that very often. There’s no vaudeville to train that kind of thing.

Stone: Yeah, but he took clowning in school.

Obama campaign raises $45M in February - USA TODAY

President Obama's campaign tweeted this morning that it raised a little more than $45 million last month -- better than January, but behind its record-setting pace of four years ago.

"In February, 348,000 people donated to raise over $45 million for this campaign," said a tweet from Obama's campaign. "Thank you."

In January, the campaign raised $29.1 million.

In February of 2008, however, Obama raised $56.8 million.

As Obama's campaign submitted its latest report to the the Federal Election Commission, it stressed the number of small donors.

Among the campaign's tweets:

-- Since April 2011, a total of 1.64 million people have pitched in to own a piece of this campaign.

-- Every buck helped. 97.7% of February's contributions were $250 or less, for an average donation of $59.04.

-- 105,000 of the people who donated in February were giving to support this organization for the first time.

The Republican Party noted that Obama's fundraising is lagging behind 2008, despite his incumbency, the addition of party campaign organizations and the fact that the president held "more fundraisers in the month of February than any month since announcing for re-election."

"After three years of policies that have left our country with record debt, high unemployment, and soaring gas prices and health care costs, it's clear President Obama is having a hard time convincing voters he deserves another term," said Republican Party spokesperson Kirsten Kukowski.

From Politico:

The (Obama) campaign's February numbers, which include several joint DNC accounts, outpace their January haul of $29.1 million -- and indicate that the campaign is may be entering a new phase of more aggressive fundraising.

Chicago is also boasting of the level of small donors: noting that 97.7 percent of last month's contributions were $250 or less, with an average donation of $59.04. In addition, 105,000 of their donors were first-time donors.

Still, Obama's fundraising pace is lagging far behind where it was in 2008 -- especially given that he was bound by far more stringent campaign maximums during the primary process. In February 2008, Obama took in $56.78 million alone -- without being able to capitalize on joint DNC fundraising.

And small donors are not where the cash is for the campaign. Breaking down Obama's fundraising numbers, big donors giving the maximum $35,800 are generally where the bulk of Obama's campaign cash comes from. But the success of the Dinner with Barack contest -- where donors are automatically entered to win a sit-down with the president -- has bolstered the overall number of small donations. ...

Olivia Wilde Returning for HOUSE Series Finale; Thomas Lennon Joins NEW GIRL Season Finale

It’s the end of March, which in TV Land means it’s time to start planning for the season finales that will air in May.  We wanted to pass along a pair of notable finale castings over at Fox.  First, TV Line reports that Olivia Wilde will return for the House series finale.  Wilde left the cast last season to capitalize on her budding movie career.  But since she played Thirteen for 80 episodes on the medical drama, so social courtesy dictates she returns for the very last episode.  Even amid the lulls, House has always been great with “event” episodes, so I am excited to see how the writers sign off after 8 seasons (presumably with a bang).  As a fan of Wilde and the character, I’m glad she will be involved.  Creator David Shore and longtime House writers are currently working on the swan song, which will air on May 21.

Hit the jump for details on Thomas Lennon‘s role in New Girl.

new-girl-fox-castAccording to The Live Feed, Mary Elizabeth Ellis will reprise her role as Caroline, the manipulative ex-girlfriend of Nick (Jake Johnson) in the final three episodes of the first season.  Nick considers moving in with Caroline, which would open up a room in the apartment.  Jess (Zooey Deschanel), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Winston (Lamorne Morris) start looking for possible replacements—Lennon will guest star as one of the candidates.  The season finale will air on May 8, cementing the first unqualified hit sitcom Fox has premiered in quite some time.

In addition to Ellis and Lennon, Justin Long will return in the penultimate episode, reprising his role as Jess’ similarly awkward romantic interest.

Stan Lee Talks About His Cameos in THE AVENGERS, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and IRON MAN 3

stan-lee-the-avengers-slice

At 89 years young, Marvel icon Stan Lee is as much of a rock star as ever. Known to millions worldwide for his hand in co-creating many of Marvel’s most recognized characters, including Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Daredevil, The Avengers, Silver Surfer and Dr. Strange, among others, Lee is still as enthusiastic and passionate about comics and the characters that inhabit their worlds as he ever was. Now, he is serving as co-executive producer and recurring guest star on Ultimate Spider-Man for Marvel Universe on Disney XD, for which he provides the voice of Stan the Janitor.

While we will post the portion of the interview where he discusses the new animated series closer to its April 1st premiere, we did want to run what he had to say about his cameos in the upcoming movies for The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man, which he says are two of his funniest, waiting to get the call for his Iron Man 3 cameo, and how he learns what he’ll be doing in each film. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

stan-lee-cameo-amazing-spider-manCollider: How much fan did you have with your cameos in The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man?

Stan Lee: The Avengers cameo that you will see, when that movie opens up, is possibly one of my best. And you know good mine have been, but it is so funny. I can’t tell you what it is ‘cause they’d kill me, but it is funny. So is the Spider-Man one, by the way. They’re deciding to make my cameos a little funnier. They know that’s what brings the audiences in, of course, so they’ve gotta play them up.

Are you already preparing for your cameo for Iron Man 3?

Lee: I haven’t done that cameo yet. It’s almost scary ‘cause they just give me a date. They’ll say, “Stan, come over next Thursday for your cameo,” but they don’t tell me what it is. So, I show up and they say, “Go to wardrobe.” In wardrobe, they say, “We want to get you a white shirt and a green sweater and a black zippered jacket,” and I’ll say, “Don’t bother, I’m wearing one.” And then, they say, “But, you can’t wear yours!,” and they look around and get me the exact same thing, but I’m not allowed to wear my own. And I still don’t know what my role will be. I go on the set and one minute before we’re gonna shoot, the director says, “Okay, Stan, this is what I want you to do.” So, I don’t know what is expected of me, until I get there, but of course, I do it magnificently.
