Clark Gregg (S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson) Talks About Viewing a Recent Cut of THE AVENGERS

In the Disney XD Marvel Universe animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, actor Clark Gregg voices Agent Phil Coulson. Although it’s the character that he also plays in Marvel’s live-action theatrical films, in this incarnation, Coulson is planted as the principal of Midtown High to keep a watchful eye on a teenage Peter Parker (voiced by Drake Bell) while he trains Spider-Man and the teen superheroes for the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization.

While we will run the portion of the interview where he talks about his involvement in the new series closer to its April 1st premiere date, we did want to post what he had to say about having seen a cut of the highly anticipated superhero movie The Avengers, which will hit theaters on May 4th.  Clearly a fan himself, Gregg thinks fans will be very excited with what director Joss Whedon has done with the film.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Collider: Have you been able to see a cut yet of The Avengers?

Clark Gregg: I will say yes to that. I’m not going to lie. I have seen a cut.

What did you think of it? How much more impressive was it then what you expected?

Gregg: I’m very excited for people to see this movie. I think the fans, like me, will be as excited as I was, when I saw it. From the minute I read Joss Whedon’s script, I thought, “Oh, man, this is going to be fun to do!” The hardest thing to get right is to figure out how to bring all those characters together, and to fulfill the promise of The Avengers. They really set a very high bar for themselves because you’ve been setting this coalition up, for these five movies, and they better deliver. And in my opinion, they thoroughly deliver.

Maggie Grace talks LOCKOUT, Working With Luc Besson and Guy Pearce, DECODING ANNIE PARKER and More at WonderCon 2012

At this weekend’s WonderCon, I was able to sit down with Maggie Grace (Lost) for an extended interview.  The reason she was attending the con was to promote Luc Besson‘s high-octane outer space thriller Lockout that also stars Guy Pearce.   In the film, Pearce plays Snow, a man wrongly accused of conspiracy to commit espionage. His one chance at a pardon comes when he is tasked with rescuing the president’s daughter from a maximum security outer space prison facility when the inmates take control.  Lockout is the feature directorial debut of James Mather and Stephen St. Leger and it opens April 13th.  For more on the film, here’s a five minute clip and our recap of the WonderCon panel.

During my interview with Grace, we talked about how she got cast, how Lockout is more of a throwback sci-fi movie, what it’s like to work for Luc Besson and with Guy Pearce, if it was more fun playing Liam Neeson‘s daughter in Taken or the President’s daughter in Lockout, and more.  In addition, Grace talks about Decoding Annie Parker (which comes out later this year) and how she’s currently filming something in Atlanta but can’t reveal what it is yet.  Hit the jump to watch.

Kenneth Branagh in Talks to Direct Jack Ryan Reboot Starring Chris Pine

Just over a week after original director Jack Bender (Lost) dropped out of the project, Paramount looks to have found a suitable replacement to helm their reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise (The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games). Vulture reports that Kenneth Branagh is now in negotiations to direct the pic, which sees Star Trek’s Chris Pine take over the franchise that has been toplined in the past by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. The project has been in development for quite some time, with a number of writers taking a stab at the screenplay. Paramount is hoping to finally get cameras rolling later this year once Pine wraps the Star Trek sequel, and having a director onboard is a fairly crucial necessity to make that happen. Given the revolving door of screenwriters on the project, it’s no surprise that creative differences have lead to this prolonged development process. Vulture hears that Pine wanted to make the film a character-driven espionage movie, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura wanted an action pic, and Paramount executives were in favor of turning the untitled reboot into a thriller. The issue has been finding a screenwriter who can combine those three genres into one cohesive movie, and apparently David Koepp (Spider-Man) recently turned in a draft that attempts to appease everyone’s demands.

I thought Branagh knocked Thor out of the park, and Paramount is surely hoping he’ll turn the untitled Jack Ryan film into a similar hit. Bringing someone of Branagh’s caliber onboard gives me hope that the studio isn’t all about explosions, and hopefully Pine’s character-driven spy thriller is the take that most prominently shines through. The reboot takes place in present day, so it won’t exactly be in step with the previous films, which were adapted from Tom Clancy’s series of novels. With Branagh nearly set, hopefully things can move forward and Paramount can hit that September 2012 start date to get the film in theaters sometime next year or in 2014.

Stan Lee Talks About His Cameos in THE AVENGERS, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and IRON MAN 3

At 89 years young, Marvel icon Stan Lee is as much of a rock star as ever. Known to millions worldwide for his hand in co-creating many of Marvel’s most recognized characters, including Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Daredevil, The Avengers, Silver Surfer and Dr. Strange, among others, Lee is still as enthusiastic and passionate about comics and the characters that inhabit their worlds as he ever was. Now, he is serving as co-executive producer and recurring guest star on Ultimate Spider-Man for Marvel Universe on Disney XD, for which he provides the voice of Stan the Janitor.

While we will post the portion of the interview where he discusses the new animated series closer to its April 1st premiere, we did want to run what he had to say about his cameos in the upcoming movies for The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man, which he says are two of his funniest, waiting to get the call for his Iron Man 3 cameo, and how he learns what he’ll be doing in each film. Collider: How much fan did you have with your cameos in The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man?

Stan Lee: The Avengers cameo that you will see, when that movie opens up, is possibly one of my best. And you know good mine have been, but it is so funny. I can’t tell you what it is ‘cause they’d kill me, but it is funny. So is the Spider-Man one, by the way. They’re deciding to make my cameos a little funnier. They know that’s what brings the audiences in, of course, so they’ve gotta play them up.

Are you already preparing for your cameo for Iron Man 3?

Lee: I haven’t done that cameo yet. It’s almost scary ‘cause they just give me a date. They’ll say, “Stan, come over next Thursday for your cameo,” but they don’t tell me what it is. So, I show up and they say, “Go to wardrobe.” In wardrobe, they say, “We want to get you a white shirt and a green sweater and a black zippered jacket,” and I’ll say, “Don’t bother, I’m wearing one.” And then, they say, “But, you can’t wear yours!,” and they look around and get me the exact same thing, but I’m not allowed to wear my own. And I still don’t know what my role will be. I go on the set and one minute before we’re gonna shoot, the director says, “Okay, Stan, this is what I want you to do.” So, I don’t know what is expected of me, until I get there, but of course, I do it magnificently.

Shortly before the panel, I got to sit down with Walker for an extended interview.  We talked about his reaction to the footage he’s seen, what it was like to work with Bekmambetov, what kind of research he did to play Abraham Lincoln, how the 3D be used, and he talks about a particularly gory reshoot and his favorite action scene in the movie.  In addition, with Walker getting ready to film Stephen Frears’ Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight, he revealed who he plays and how excited he is to work his Christopher Plummer.  Hit the jump to watch.

While we will run the portion of the interview where he talks about his involvement in the new series closer to its April 1st premiere date, we did want to post what he had to say about having seen a cut of the highly anticipated superhero movie The Avengers, which will hit theaters on May 4th.  Clearly a fan himself, Gregg thinks fans will be very excited with what director Joss Whedon has done with the film.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Collider: Have you been able to see a cut yet of The Avengers?

Clark Gregg: I will say yes to that. I’m not going to lie. I have seen a cut.

What did you think of it? How much more impressive was it then what you expected?

Gregg: I’m very excited for people to see this movie. I think the fans, like me, will be as excited as I was, when I saw it. From the minute I read Joss Whedon’s script, I thought, “Oh, man, this is going to be fun to do!” The hardest thing to get right is to figure out how to bring all those characters together, and to fulfill the promise of The Avengers. They really set a very high bar for themselves because you’ve been setting this coalition up, for these five movies, and they better deliver. And in my opinion, they thoroughly deliver.
